Assignment 2 – Team Assignment – 30% – Due Date: Week 12
Purpose: To apply the Compensation and Benefits knowledge in real-world situation.
Task 1: Develop and apply a job evaluation plan for Eastern Provincial University.
Working with your project group, use the case Eastern Provincial University posted on
eCentennial.
Submit a written report for grading in paragraph form.
Breakdown of Task 1: Eastern Provincial University
Using the point method, develop a job evaluation system for the “Eastern Provincial
University” case using the maximum number of points set at 1000. (60 marks)
You need to identify and explain:
A. The compensable factors you have selected for the system, including two subfactors from
each of the categories; (15 marks)
B. The factor scales you are using (use four factor scales) refer to example in Exhibit 5.10
(page92 of the text), (15 marks)
C. Weight the factors and develop a summary rating chart as shown in Exhibit 1 – SAMPLE
SUMMARY RATING CHART FOR POINT METHOD OF JOB EVALUATION on eCentennial (15
marks)
D. In completing your job evaluation plan, you should have provided a set of well-designed job
evaluation scales. Then apply your system to the different jobs so that there is a point total
for each job. This will produce a single hierarchy of jobs. Provide a summary of the results
and display the information in a table similar to Exhibit 2 – RESULTS OF JOB EVALUATION

Important Notes: It is critical for you to have good understanding of the contents of Chapter 5
to complete this part of the assignment. Try to follow the course contents and lecture notes.

Task 2: Propose a compensation strategy for Northern Software.
CASE: Northern Software
Software engineers directly affect the success of many start-up companies. Suppose that a
group of investors is about to create a new start-up, a specialty software company based in Fort
McMurray, Alberta. These investors have hired you to help them determine the marketing
manager’s pay. What would you advise? You will need to get some information on Fort
McMurray and on the specialty software industry. Consider the information from the text in
Chapter 7 Exhibits 7.1 (Page 134) 7.2 (Page 135) and 7.11 (Page 152) in making your
recommendation.
Task 2: Northern Software Questions (30 marks)
1. Identify the competitive pay policy regarding external competitiveness. Explain the pros
and cons of each policy option. Provide your recommendation and rationale for competitive
pay policy that you would advise.
2. Explain the mix of pay forms that you would recommend.
3. Consider the theories and research presented from the text in Chapter 7. Identify the
theories and discuss which ones you used to support your recommendation.
4. List three pieces of additional information you would like to have to refine your
recommendation. Explain how this information would help you.
Requirements and Marking Criteria:
1. Provide information that is specific and relevant to the case and well justified with
compensation principles and research findings.
2. Use the text and conduct research for relevant information and knowledge to complete
the questions.
3. Assignment style and format: Your assignment should not exceed 12 pages excluding
your cover page and citations. Follow the APA (American Psychological Association) Format for
providing references. Formatting required: 12-point font, double-spaced, 1” margins. Ensure
that your assignment is free from spelling and grammatical errors.
4. Papers include a cover page, and note your team names and student ID# (this page will
not be included as part of your overall page count).

5. Submit one electronic copy of your assignment to the dropbox on eCentennial and one
printed paper copy of your assignment to your professor at the beginning of class on the due
date. Assignments will not be accepted through ANY other means without my prior approval.
6. Together with your team’s submission, attach individual team member’s work. No
marks will be awarded to student(s) who do not submit individual work. Those who contribute
below equity will have their mark reduced. Individual team member’s work MUST accompany
each group assignment submission, it will not be accepted afterwards or separate from the
group submission. This information will not be included as part of the overall page count.
7. Late Assignments: Late papers will be penalized 10% per day (including weekends);
unless extenuating circumstances prevail as per the Business School Assignment Policy. Once
this assignment is graded and returned to the class, no late submissions will be accepted. If you
foresee any difficulty completing the assignment on time, please be proactive and discuss your
circumstances with me ASAP BEFORE the due date.
8. Appendices: (not contributing to page count) If required, materials used in collection
and presentation (e.g. Charts, tables, etc.) should be appended to your submitted report.
Evaluation:
This assignment is worth 30% of the total course grade. The marks are of team-based reward.
Each member of the group will be given the same marks on the condition that each member’s
contribution can be identified in the final results.
Grading Criteria
1. Evidence of substantial effort through the project, not a hastily put together paper.
2. Evidence of group cooperation.
3. Evidence of careful writing of a well integrated paper, not just several parts put together
(This will be reflected in Paper Integration in grading).
4. Arguments are well justified.
