Designing with software

Purpose
• CAD [ Computer Aided Design] essentially
is the use of computers and specialised software programs to
create event specific design requirements eg maps, plans, 3D
layouts etc
Benefits include:
– Improved quality of output ie accurate measurements/scale in
floor plans vs hand drawn versions
– Better functionality by enabling electronic files
– Increased capability eg 2D + 3D
– More realistic end product

Requirements
• Part of being easily accessible is the ability of software to be used
on a variety of platforms. There are CAD systems available for all
major platforms including Microsoft, Linux, UNIX and Mac.
• Bonus is there is no special [pc] hardware required to operate this
type of software, although some software that generates more
detailed graphics or related tasks, might require a modern graphics
card and high speed CPUs
• TOOLS: pc mouse and pens [computer pens/stylus]

Software types
There are two types of graphics that support CAD software, they are:
• Vector graphics: 2 D graphics and uses of points, lines, curves or shapes to
represent images. Usually one object is made up of a number/many of
scalable objects. One limitation is because you can change the size, the
object is susceptible to distortion/ resolution.
– They are ‘unstable’ for producing photo realistic imagery
– Usually made up of solid colours or gradients
– A common program that uses VECTOR is Adobe Illustrator.
• Raster graphics: or BITMAP as it’s more commonly known, is a dot matrix
data structure which is represented ‘bit by bit’ on a computer screen. Other
formats include photos from digital cameras and photos on the web.

CAD Output
• Completed CAD items can be in various formats and for various
purposes. See below for samples:
– 3D venue layout
– Stage setting
– Gear/equipment labels [for organised transport of
stage/production equipment]
– Seating plan
– Floor plan

From designing the stage, staging elements to designing for transport
enabling swift setup/packdown….. CAD operates throughout the whole
process. Check this out:

• PRG [Production Resource Group]:
They service theatres, award nights, gala & related functions. PRG use
AutoCad to design their AV; lighting; line drawings; modelling and site
plans.
They use ‘cloud’ computing to store their files which makes accessing
for operational crew really quick – real time access when they’re on site
for setup.

Other event uses
Operational event delivery has a variety of uses for CAD – parts are
pre-event where requirements include:
• site layout plans;
• emergency plans, and
• spectator pathways
