Instructions for Writing the Essay
These are the general guidelines that you nee
d to follow in writing y
our essay for PTR
293.
Introduction
Your essay must have a short introduction that neatly summarises what you are about to do
and how you are about to do it. Do not beat around the bush but get straight into the
question/subject mat
ter of the essay. Remember also that a good introduction should have an
“impact” factor and should stimulate the interest of the reader to read on. It should also be a
road map, telling the reader how your arguments will unfold and the key points that you
will
be making through your arguments.
Main Body/Argument
This is the heart of your essay. Your arguments should unfold in a logical manner and not be
all over the place. Your arguments should not be just descriptive (that is purely reporting and
describ
ing facts) but analytical (that is, probing deeper to ask the why, how, what, when, etc.,
questions). In working out your arguments, be very question specific

that is ask yourself if
through your arguments you have actually
answered the question/s asked
.
Conclusion
Again should be brief but should remind the reader what you had hoped to accomplish, how
you have achieved that, and why your findings are important.
Citation Style
If you are using someone else’s words verbatim, you must put the words withi
n quotation
marks and cite the source. If you are using someone else’s idea or concept, you must also
acknowledge the source. If you are paraphrasing information obtained from various sources,
you must cite these sources at the end of the paragraph. If in
doubt, please consult the
University’s policy on plagiarism.
When citing in the text, please put the last name of the author, date of publication and page
number within brackets. For example, (Wilson 2010: 230
-
231). If more than one source, use
the follow
ing

(Ganguly 2010: 230
-
231; Mandaville 2007: 15
-
25; and so on).
