Excavation
1. Enlarge the footprint by 5 feet for accuracy and slope, then determine the volume of topsoil to be removed and stockpiled, if the thickness 9”. 2. If no soil is to be stockpiled, and the swell is 10 percent, how many truck loads will it take to cart away from the site using 7 cy trucks?
Foundation
A cross section of the 24” wide continuous footing is shown. Assume this footing detail applies to all footings throughout the building. 3. Determine the total linear feet of footing required? 4. Calculate the cross-sectional area of the footing? 5. Determine the volume of concrete in cubic yards for the footing. Add 5% for waste and round off.
Slab
6. Given that the slab is 4” thick, calculate the volume of concrete required for the slab (use 8% waste factor). 7. Given WWF was specified for the reinforcing in the slab, determine how many rolls are required? Assumptions: 750 sf per roll and add 20% for lap and waste. 8. Using the following labor and material rates calculate the cost to provide and install the WWF and pour the concrete slab. Productivity rate for slab = 0.4 labor hours/cy Productivity rate for WWF = 1 labor hour/roll Labor rate for slab and WWF = $14.50/hr

To increase your knowledge of the building cost estimating field, reflect on the work you have done in this course and in particular, on Chapter 19—Profit. There is little available information published on how to calculate profit for a project or what a reasonable profit is, so there will be no single right answer to this writing assignment. Your response will be based upon your experiences. Describe in a written essay how you would calculate the profit to be added to a project. If you have a project in mind, use that as an example, but if not, make up one. You do not have to prepare an estimate for this exercise, but you must consider many of the different types of work we have learned about, and each will likely have labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
1. Provide a brief description of the project you have selected.
2. Describe three (3) considerations you would make in calculating the profit for this project.
3. Describe the process that you would use to calculate the profit. Provide two (2) supporting facts that justify your method.
4. Describe three (3) reasons why your method is fair and reasonable.

Part D: Checklist for Style - Local Newspaper
Using the “Checklist for Style” on the following page (also found in Chapter 11 of your textbook), rewrite the following letter to a local newspaper.
In the absence of definitive studies regarding the optimum length of the school day, I can only state my personal opinion based upon observations based by me and upon teacher observations that have been conveyed to me. Considering the length of the present school day, it is my opinion that the day is excessive length-wise for most elementary pupils, certainly for almost all of the primary children.
To find my answer to the problem requires consideration of two ways in which the problem may be viewed. One way focuses upon the needs of the children, while the other focuses upon logistics, transportation, scheduling, and other limits imposed by the educational system. If it is necessary to prioritize these two ideas, it would seem reasonable to give the first consideration to the primary reason for the very existence of the system, i.e., to meet the educational needs of the children the system is trying to serve.

Part C: Difficult to Follow Instructions
Find a short set of instructions or some other technical document from work or the Internet that is hard to follow. Replicate or download those instructions at the top of a one-page analysis. Assume that you are the Associate Director of Communications for the company that produced this document and that you are doing a final review before the document is released. Using the “Checklist for Instructions and Procedures” on the following page (also found in Chapter 20 of your textbook), identify what, specifically, makes the document difficult to use, providing a specific reference for each problem area.
Part D: Ted Talk Lecture Evaluation

Watch a 10-20 minute TED Talks lecture online (www.ted.com). There are 27 evaluation criteria on the “Checklist for Oral Presentations” below (also found in Chapter 24 of your textbook). Select 10 among them that you believe are most salient for this speaker. Identify strong areas and areas that could have been better. Provide an example for each. (These are skilled speakers, so you'll probably be highlighting more strengths than weaknesses.)
