Classical sociologists have described economic interests, i.e. the desire of people to increase their wealth, as one of the motivations for social action. What importance did different authors ( say about the role of economic interest explaining social life at large) attribute to this motive for the task of explaining social life at large?
What other motives of action, if any, are evoked and how are they related to strictly
economic motives? What kind of social factors have historically either hampered or facilitated economic interests? To what extend would it be possible to live in a society where economic interests are the only existing motivation for action?
I am focusing on writing on Marx, Weber and durkeim’s viewpoints.
