TLS 356 Position Paper #1 Details Choose ONE of the following statements to take a position on. Discuss how (and why) you agree and/or disagree. While this is a “position paper” in which you will make an argument, you cannot rely on your feelings alone. You must incorporate the readings from the first half of the semester in your response. I would highly encourage you to also incorporate (and cite) other, outside sources. Unlike your reflection papers, this essay should NOT be written in the firstperson. You are free to choose a citation style (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.), but the expectation is that this will be a well-crafted, polished paper (with at least 1000 words). 1. Sports should be de-emphasized in school settings. 2. Schools should offer “no cut” (equal opportunity) sport programs for adolescent students. 3. Sports socialize young athletes to accept some problematic cultural values like hypermasculinity and a “win-at-all-costs” mentality. The essay lays out a clear and coherent argument. Justification for Position The arguments included in the paper are well grounded in facts, figures and established theory. Critical Thinking The essay demonstrated high level critical thought that challenges the “status quo.” Considerations are made for underrepresented and underprivileged populations. Sources of Information The paper incorporates mutiple assigned readings from the course, as well as other relevant, legitimate, outside sources. The references are used effectively to bolster an argument. Quality of Writing The essay flows seamlessly with a clear introduction and conclusion.
