make a “connection” between contemporary events, trends, manners, mores and values-the habits thought, beliefs of present day Americans-and the literary texts assigned in our survey. That is, the themes of gender politics, race relations class divisions, colonialism, religion, American rhetoric, capitalism and free enterprise, to name only the most salient instances, may be observed in works as diverse as Columbus’s letter, Anne Bradstreet’s poetry, Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography, Royall Tyler’s The Contrast, as well as the short fiction of Hawthorne and Poe. And we may observe these same themes presently in the nightly newscast, in our neighborhoods, and households, in conversation we overhear or participate in, in movies we see and articles we read. Choose one such “contemporary” example and connect it with a text the we have read or will read.
There are two parts to this assignment: 1) summarize the article, movie, real-life instance in two concise yet sufficiently detailed paragraphs; 2) analyze the “connection” that exists between the contemporary source and the literary text(s)) from our survey.
If it’s a short article- from a newspaper, magazine, or off the internet-then append a photocopy of the source to the end of your assignment.
P.S The heart of the assignment lies in the analysis, so don’t sell that part short. Also, I’ll gladly give you feedback on any prospective ideas or hunches that you may have.
