STUDENT INSTRUTION AND PLAN
Expectation:
- It has to be a high quality work in terms of analysis, answering the questions with adequate and relevant information backed up by data.
- The writing style must have high standard English and without any grammatical and spelling error.
- It is highly encouraging that the expert should share the preliminary findings (quantitative and qualitative) with the student before start writing the report.
- The expert should follow the Naylor report and CRC_ten years evaluation report to understand the required writing format specially Executive summary, recommendation, references etc.
- Include the methodology of collecting the data. Quantitate data has been collected by ERA application records and Qualitative data has been collected my Survey Monkey sending email to the stakeholders and awardees.
- Lucrative presentation of the figures and charts using multi-media is encouraged. Specifically the qualitative quotes need to be well visualized in separate boxes.
- The expert must use NVivo to do the qualitative analysis.
Guidelines
The student already did preliminary works to gather most of the analysis information and data. This assignment is followed by previous mid-term assignment which was on the same program. This assignment follows that work.
- Expert must generate adequate knowledge on importance of early and mid-career research work and their current status in general. Also do extensive search to find out their problems and suggestions. Student has provided some.
- Get know the 3-funding programs of Ontario government and their application eligibility criteria very well. It will also be helpful if you know similar programs in other jurisdictions. As our program is ERA special attention should be on it. Also go through the mid-term assessment on multi-year performance analysis of ERA report to generate ideas on its focus and importance of expansion.
- Expert should go through the Naylor report to generate enough ideas writing context and recommendation in terms of policy. Note that, Naylor report has been created for Federal government and based on it Federal government has increased budget for research. So, Provincial budget should follow that. Our policy recommendation would back up that showing the need and success of current program etc. You may also take a look on the budget and it’s implication on Ontario.
- For the analysis you can follow student’s plan and also bring up your suggestions. Remember, to show statistical justification as much as possible for both quantitative and qualitative findings.
- The consultation feedback is a combination of feedback from all 3-funding program including ERA. So information is scattered and mixed in some cases. Multiple award winners have won ERA and others also. So, sometimes they made comments together or in general. So, take caution to locate ERA based issue.
| Question | Activities | Additional Suggestion |
| Who are the most likely ERA recipients? Those in the earliest stages of their career? Are those who are closest to the eligibility limit the most likely to win an award?
|
Find the year gap between the awardees PhD/MD graduation year and ERA application approval year. Then will create 3 age groups (1-3, 4-6, 7 and above) for 450 ERA award winners (application submission year) from 2014 onwards (year-wise). You can make stack column chart to show these 3 groups. It will provide info on the career stage of the ERA awardees. Show the cut-off point and/or average age of winning ERA award. Also, mean year of PhD/MD/DVM and median. Show mastery what additional statistical calculation is possible like SD, Margin of error if applicable.
Justify sample size: Remember we took all 450 awardees during the time period.
Describe properly. Context, Figure, Trend, Findings and Probabilities. |
Check the consultation feedbacks to gather more idea in this context.
It’s up to use if you want to show qualitative information separately to answer the same question. |
| Did the ERAs help the early career researchers advance their career in Ontario?
|
Please take out the most from the ERA survey data performance matrix (mid-term project) to locate the career path (inside or outside Ontario, and sectors wise – Govt., Private, Public funded research institutes) of the ERA awardees.
And Consider the academic and economic benefits that ERA brought to the province. You will find them in the mid-term project. But, use mastery to give more contexts into this besides showing the findings. |
Check the consultation feedbacks if you can locate anything to support this qualitatively.
It’s up to use if you want to show qualitative information separately to answer the same question. |
| Does the ERA application eligibility criteria need changes allowing to create a new, separate option for mid-career researchers or focus on those in the earliest stages of their careers (1-5 years post-PhD)?
|
This is more like the 1st question. So bring the context of answer of 1st question, But redefine the groups in 2 categories this time (5 years from PhD or less and More than 5 years from PhD – commonly found in other jurisdiction award, if you have some other idea please use with proper references) and compare the ERA years to PhD age group categories with the ERA application eligibility period (10 years from the MD/PhD graduation year).
Describe properly. Context, Figure, Trend, Findings and Probabilities.
This will give us an idea where the ERA winners are. If in late stage, then we can justify to create another category like MRA (Mid-career researchers award). Check other jurisdictions. |
For Mid-term career stream, we will depend mostly on the Qualitative analysis of the consultation feedback that Ministry got by using Survey Monkey in 2017.
Also check Nature articles and Naylor Commission Report (http://ift.tt/28O5tY8 submitted to Federal Government in 2017 to generate idea on this. |
Qualitative Analysis Activities:
Generate themes with quotes and place them appropriately with adequate description, find out the weighted percentage (word frequency, count, and same words/theme) and make a word cloud in Nvivo.
Remember, our priority is to locate the words/quotes for the theme/code/node which fulfill the strategic objectives (need, success) of the ERA and potential mid-career program.
