Early Researcher Awardees Statistics since 2014
We have assessed all 450 ERA recipients from 2014 to 2018 and calculated how many years there between when the recipient completed their Ph.D., M.D., D.V.M. or equivalent and when their successful application for an ERA was made. For the purpose, we have to retrieve all of their applications in archive.
Findings:
Figure 1: Years from Ph.D. or equivalent for ERA awardees, 2014-2018
Figure 1 shows that among the three categories of years from Ph.D. or equivalent, the proportion of winners who are in the earliest career stages (less than 3 years from Ph.D.) have consistently remained low (around 10%) in recent years. The latest round of ERA (the results have yet to be made public) is down to a low of 6%. The proportion of winners in the middle (4-6 years from Ph.D.) has been higher in 2016 and 2017 although later career stage winners (7-10 years from Ph.D.) stood higher in the very recent round of ERA. On average, 8% of recipients were 1-3 years from receiving their Ph.D. or equivalent, 43% were 4-6 years from Ph.D. and 49% were 7 years or more from Ph.D.
Again, we have used the same 450 ERA awardees data and placed it into the more common definition of five years from Ph.D. or equivalent as found in other jurisdictions like Australia (Future Fellowships), European Research Council (ERC Consolidator Grants) etc.
Figure 2: Years from Ph.D. or equivalent for ERA awardees, 2014-2018
Figure 2 shows that in recent years, those who were more than five years from Ph.D. or equivalent (69%) bagged the ERA award more (almost 3:1 ratio) than those who were less than five years from Ph.D. or equivalent (31%).
Key notes:
- The number winners in earliest stage careers are significantly low (≤10%) in the most recent rounds of ERA.
- Experienced ERA applicants who were more than five years from Ph.D. or equivalent are outperforming (3:1 ratio) the earliest stage career applicants who were less than five years from Ph.D. or equivalent.
