The Essay
After you have read your novel, you will write a 1000-1300 word (4-5 pages doublespaced) essay pertaining to any of the major ‘themes’ within the novel.
To do so you will establish one of the major themes in the novel (a universal idea) and construct a concise thematic statement as your central argument (thesis). You will then develop this idea with support from the novel by looking at the literary, structural and stylistic elements of your novel. You should consider at least three of the following to support your argument, but you will likely find that many overlap. For example, you may find yourself discussing the author’s choice of words and how these help to develop a character, which in turn provides support for your thesis.

Formatting

This is to be a formal essay and the conventions of essay writing that you have been taught in class will be expected in full effect.

Additionally, students are expected to use a minimum of 6 quotations from the novel, which should be documented inMLA style (you can find the most current version of MLA style online). Your essay must include a proper Works Cited page and there will be fairly serious penalties for failing to submit it with the least of these being marks deducted.

Your paper will be graded on both style and content and will be worth a substantial portion of your final term mark.

Your essay must be typed. It must be double-spaced, using Times New Roman, size 12 with default margin size (1.25″ on the sides, 1″ on the top/bottom).

Unfortunately, hand-written essays cannot be accepted as the essay must be submitted to Turnitin.com.

Secondary sources are not needed for this particular project and are strictly forbidden. Plagiarism will result in a mark of zero on the assignment. A zero on this assignment will seriously jeopardize your final mark.
