Thailand: Forced Labour, Trafficking persist in Fishing Fleets (Human Rights Watch)
Research topic: Why are the set measure to protect forced labour among the fishing industry in Thailand Failing?
After Thailand received international attention in relation to the forced labour practiced by the fishers within he country, the migrants in the country have been the victims of the low wages, over working, and physical torture. Due to the international pressure on the Thailand government to ensure these stops, different polices have been formulated and put in place to ensure that these human rights violations are stopped. But from the gathered information it is evident that the polices are not yet effective due to different reasons.
According to the Human right watch a research conducted shows that the implemented polices have been mostly in favour of the employers hence living the fishers still under the same torture and human right violation. The article has pointed out that the workers are still receiving the same harassment and abuse since the policies are not well implemented (Human Rights Watch. 2018). This shows that the government has more work to do so as to ensure that the migrant working in the country are protected. Some of the interviewed migrants shared their experiences showing sign of torture by the boat captains which leaves them with physical injures as well as low compensations. The government on the other hand claims that the human rights are being observed while the state on the ground shows the opposite of the entire situation.
Some polices such as providing the workers with the legal document to work in the country have been put in place but the findings covered in the article shows that the employers have used this as an approach to exploit the migrants more. Different human rights organizations as well as the international bodies such as the EU issues the country a yellow card which as a warning to ensure that if the country does not ensure the workers are treated well and the human right observed (Lindley, J. and Techera, E.J., 2017). From the research conducted it is then evident that the same has not been fully implemented and the measures taken seem to be failing.
This provides a research gap worth covering. It is important to research on how to ensure that the country provides security to the fishermen working on these boats. The research is to help create a bridge between the workers who have been identified as immigrants and the government as well as the human rights watch. The research will provide effective measure that ensures the government clearly stops the forced labour as well as stops the harassment and overworking of the fishermen. The research will also formulate different strategies that ensures the work********** paid **********t the employers do not interfere with their human rights. It is important to ensure that the human rights are observed.
