Detailed Instructions and Examples for the Project Work
Creating an Information Resource – Examples and Tools
The Project is to develop ONE information resource, i.e. you only have to pick one of the types –
or even come up with your own if you are creative.
The following information and links provide examples of various types of information resources
along with the tools and techniques to create them.

PowerPoint Simulations
Examples
Activity 3 Tutorial 3 (Snapshot effect) is an example of a simple PowerPoint simulation
Other examples include –
Prepare for an Earthquake (https://ift.tt/2o9jftm
1.amazonaws.com/community/showcase/earthquake/player.html
)
Diagnosis simulation (https://ift.tt/2BIaIr0)
(Note – these are professional productions developed by teams. You are not expected to have
this quality)
Techniques
Use the same technique as the Snapshot effect to create a PowerPoint simulation.
You can use software designed to convert PowerPoint to Flash to make it available online without
having to download.
See
this page (https://ift.tt/2oaEICu) for more information about creating branching simulations
Alternative Tools
The following is a list of alternative tools to choose from. You only need to choose ONE in order to
convert the PowerPoint file to be viewed online –
Articulate Presenter (do not buy – free 30 day trial available)
iSpring (do not buy – free 30 day trial available)

Narrated PowerPoint
Examples
The online lecture modules are examples of narrated PowerPoint presentations (that have been
converted to be able to be viewed online without having to download the presentation).
Other examples include –
CPR (https://ift.tt/2o9jftm
1.amazonaws.com/community/guru/2009/CPR/index.html
)
Evernote Tour (https://ift.tt/2o9jftm
1.amazonaws.com/community/guru/2009/Evernote/index.html
)
Techniques
There are 2 main methods for creating narrated PowerPoint presentations –
1. Use software designed for the purpose
2. Use screen recording software while running the presentation and talking into the
microphone
Alternative Tools
The following is a list of alternative tools (software and web services) to choose from. You only need

Further Information for creating a narrated PPT presentation (Voice over PPT)
For this type of eLesson resource (a type of digital content), you design PPT slides first, and
then you record voice. Basically you are going to narrate with an existing regular PowerPoint
presentation, however you can choose different tools:
1. Use MS Powerpoint 2010
a) Open up your Powerpoint presentation. Click on Slide Show. Make sure Play
narrations
, Use timings, and Show media controls are all checked.
2
b) Click on Record Slide Show, that will bring up the dropdown list – You can record
from the beginning or from current slide.
c) You will see the following window, and you can simply start recording
d) You will see the following little window as you are recording.
e) When you start the recording wait a second before speaking. Go ahead and speak.
Then, when you are done with that slide wait a second before advancing.
f) If you are going to narrate the next slide, click the right arrow key to advance to the
next slide. HOWEVER, if that is the ONLY slide you want to record over, instead of
clicking the right arrow key, click the ESC key to terminate the recording.
3
g) Periodically save the file (ESC key to terminate the recording and then resume)
h) When you have finished your recording you will convert it to a WMV (Windows
Media Video) file. Click the File tab and click Save and Send
For details, refer to
https://ift.tt/2P9qrBx
2. Use Powerpoint to Flash converter from www.flipbuilder.com.
It’s very easy to use. Check by your own whether a free version is still available.
3. Use Camtasia Studio to record PPT
This is a professional level of eLearning creation tool. A trial version is available
4. Use Articulate Studio
Upon installation, an Add-On of Articulate will be placed in the MS Powerpoint. It’s
handy to use, and a trial version is available.
4
5. Use Adobe Captivate for Windows (or Mac)
It’s kind of similar to Camtasia but with more advance features. Adobe® Captivate
software helps you rapidly author a wide range of interactive eLearning and HTML5-
based mLearning content. One can easily Import MS PowerPoint slides and
enrich with
multimedia, interactive elements and quizzes.
When creating the narrated Powerpoint presentation, you can even consider text-tospeech technique if the software has the feature supported. There are third-party textto-speech programs, e.g. NaturalReader, but it may need you further editing.

YouTube Instructional Videos + Quiz
Instruction
An instructional video can be great on it’s own. However, as this activity requires interaction as one
of the component so quizzes are one suggested way of adding interactivity.
Examples
There are thousands of instructional ‘How-to’ videos on YouTube. Some examples include –
Simple steps to go paperless (makes use of a presenter)
Evernote Stacks (just uses narrated screen recording)
Examples of
quizzes include –
US Country Study
Range of demos using Articulate Quizmaker
Techniques
The easiest way to develop quizzes is to use software designed for the purpose. Videos can be
created using video editing software (eg. iMovie and Windows Movie Maker). You can also create
videos using screen recording software.

Interactive PDFs
Instruction
You can create an interactive PDF by using the PowerPoint simulation technique (ie. hyperlinks to
different slides) and then
saving the presentation as a PDF. It acts like a story book that can change
depending on the options that user clicks.
You can even make multimedia pdfs, in which your documents are no longer limited to static words
and basic images.
Example (without content)
Original PowerPoint File
Interactive PDF
The types of content are similar to the PowerPoint simulation. The advantage is that a user
can download the PDF and take it with them.
eBrochures
Multimedia PDFs

Prezi Presentation
Instruction
Prezi is a free and easy to use presentation tool that enables you to create visually engaging and
unique presentations with little technical knowledge. A Zooming User Interface technique allows
users to zoom in and out of their presentation media, and allows users to display and navigate
through information.
Examples
There are thousands of Prezi presentation examples on the Prezi official web site and instructional
videos on YouTube. Some examples include –

Wiki Content Management Design
Instruction
A wiki site creates a collaborative website environment that allows users to freely create and edit
Web page content using any Web browser. Like many simple concepts, “open editing” has some
profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a
Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content
composition by nontechnical users.
Examples
There are many wiki examples on the Internet, for instance:

WordPress Content Management Design
Instruction
WordPress started as just a blogging system, but has evolved to be used as full content
management system and so much more through the thousands of plugins, widgets, and themes.
Examples
There are many examples of websites developed using Wrodpress, for instance:

Mobile Apps
Tools
A mobile app using the tools suggested here should only be attempted if you already have a good
knowledge of HTML and Javascript
Web apps
If you do have this knowledge then you can create web apps quickly using jQuery Mobile
The docs section contains lots of examples and sample code to work with.
Native apps
One of the easiest ways to convert a web app into a native app that works across a range of
platforms is to use
PhoneGap Build

iBooks
Tools
iBooks Author Overview
iBooks Author is free authoring software for the Mac that allows you to create interactive
books which can contain video, slide viewers and other interactive elements. It is very easy
to use (drag and drop).
To get an overview watch this short (3 min)
YouTube video
For more details go to this page (https://ift.tt/wb0Djs)
iBooks author is available for free from the Mac App Store.
Note – iBooks Author is only available for Mac

Others
If you have other creative ideas to develop an interactive information resource you can use them
too. If you are unsure whether it is appropriate or not you can check the idea with your tutor.
