Prepare An Assessment of a Critical Issue in Community Corrections
The goal of the term paper is to demonstrate your mastery and synthesis of a significant body of work in the community corrections field (beyond the materials covered in the textbook). The paper should be organized as a literature review typically found in a thesis.
The organizing frame of the paper can be one of two types: a perspective (where you use a theory such as control theory, conflict theory, labeling theory, etc., to guide your discussion of the community corrections issue) or a specialized concern in community corrections emerging out of your own research interests (i.e., strategies to incorporate restorative justice into community-based treatment programs, criticisms of restorative justice programs, probationary classification techniques and suggestions for improvement, etc.).
Please discuss your organizing frame with the instructor prior to beginning the paper.
Your term paper should have a Cover Page and a References Page at the end. You should rely on at least five references outside of the course textbook to support your stance on the topic. You should not use wikipedia.com as a reference. All references should be scholarly academic works. If you are unsure of what qualifies as a scholarly academic work, please contact the instructor for assistance.
Be sure to address each of the elements below in 10–20 pages:
Clearly identify the problem or issue in community corrections. Provide clear examples of how and why this is a problem for community corrections, practitioners and/or offenders.
Analyze relevant literature related to your issue. Summarize the studies and describe how they are related to your issue.
Prepare recommendations for advancing the state of knowledge on your chosen issue or problem. Clearly discuss how the prior research is related to these recommendations.
The Cover Page, Body of the paper, and References Page should all be in APA format. Also, all in-text citations of outside sources plus the listing of all references should adhere to APA format. All text pages should be double-spaced and in 12-point font.
Your term paper should be anywhere from 10–20 pages in length (plus a Title Page and a References Page). Page length is not the basis of a favorable grade. If submissions are less than the minimum, the instructor may reduce the grade in his or her discretion.
The organization of the paper should be analytical revolving around a specialized concern in community corrections emerging out of your own research interests.
